Homemade Hops Dryer
Detailed below are directions and descriptions of parts and
processes used to build a hops/herb dryer. When completely
built and assembled, the box fan should only be run on low speed
to avoid disturbing the hops any more than necessary. The trays
should be shifted to a different position in the stack on at
least a daily basis to allow for more even trying.
- Section A - Hops trays
- The upper section of the hops tray is constructed of 1x2
strips of pine. The screen is section of nylon window screen.
The lower section is 1x0.5 strips of pine tacked to the upper
section holding the screen firmly sandwiched in the frame.
There should be enough trays built to hold a loosly packed
single layer of hops cones on each tray.
- Section B - Filter Trays
- The filter tray section uses 2 furnace filters the same size
as the box fan, if possible. The 1x4 pine frame should be
built to fit snugly around the box fan. Strips of 1x1 pine
should be attached to the inside of the frame allowing the
furnace filters to fit within the frame. The furnace filters
are added for the following 3 purposes: filter the air from
dust and contaminates, reduce the rate of air flow, create a
laminar air flow through the drying hops.
- Section C - Box Fan Support
- The box fan support needs to be build to hold the box fan
at least 6 inches off the ground to help avoid dust and dirt
contamination of the drying hops.
